The AKEZ X9 takes a different shape to the rest of the fat tire range. Instead of a conventional diamond bicycle frame it uses a low-slung, moped-style aluminum alloy chassis with an integrated battery housing and a long padded bench seat rated for two riders. The result looks closer to a small vintage motorcycle than a bicycle, and the riding position is upright with the feet further forward than on a standard mountain-style frame.

Power comes from a 1500W peak brushless geared hub motor producing over 90 Nm of torque, fed by a 48V 18Ah removable lithium-ion pack whose electrical system carries UL 2849 certification. AKEZ rates the machine for grades up to 30 percent and quotes a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph), selectable across three riding modes. The pack charges in about four hours and detaches from the frame, so it can be carried indoors rather than bringing the whole bike inside.

The chassis is built for rough ground rather than smooth tarmac. A telescopic front fork pairs with twin rear coil shocks to give full suspension travel, and 20 x 4.0-inch puncture-resistant fat tires with an aggressive tread pattern handle sand, snow, mud and loose gravel. Braking is by 180mm hydraulic disc rotors front and rear, and a Shimano 7-speed cassette and chain provide the pedal drivetrain. Wiring and connectors are sealed for wet-weather use, and the battery housing is IPX4 rated.

A bright LED display reports speed, battery level, distance and power mode. Lighting is integrated into the bodywork: headlight, taillight and turn signals. The aluminum frame is rated to a 330-pound maximum load, which with the bench seat accommodates a passenger or a larger solo rider up to roughly 6'4". Note that AKEZ itself specifies that the full-throttle 28 mph mode is intended for private trail and off-road use.
