The Mud Monster XL is the two-seat, 60-volt version of MotoTec's off-road kart, and the step up in hardware is substantial. A 2000-watt brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor drives the rear wheels through a shaft rather than a chain, with a 10:1 gear ratio, a differential and more than 12 Nm of torque on tap. Top speed is 25 mph, and forward and reverse are selectable.

Suspension is independent at the front with a hydraulic shock at each corner, backed by dual hydraulic shocks in the rear, so the kart stays composed with two people aboard on broken ground. Low-pressure 145/70-6 front and 16x8-7 rear tires trade a little rolling speed for grip and ride comfort, and two foot-operated hydraulic rear discs bring 320 lbs of kart plus passengers down from speed.

The cabin is the other reason to pick the XL. It seats two on an adjustable bench with a four-point harness, a padded roll bar overhead, more shoulder room than most karts in the class, and a pair of 15-watt Bluetooth speakers built in. A rear storage rack carries gear, and a kill switch is within reach. It is rated for riders 13 and up, up to a combined 400 lbs and about 67 inches tall.

A helmet and full safety gear are required, and an adult should supervise every ride.

Normal wear items such as tires, tubes, brake pads, chains and batteries are not covered, and neither is damage from racing, jumping, collisions, improper assembly, modification, or riding beyond the rated limits.
