The Himiway D5 Pro, previously the Zebra Pro, is the mid-drive member of the D5 family. Instead of a motor in the rear hub, the D5 Pro puts a 500W torque-sensing motor at the cranks, so power goes through the chain and the gears. The practical effect is that you can shift down and let the drivetrain multiply torque on a steep pitch, exactly as you would on a conventional bike - and the weight sits low and central rather than out at the back wheel, which makes the bike easier to place on loose ground.

Himiway rates the motor at 130Nm with a 1300W peak, and the torque sensor means it responds to pressure on the pedals rather than just to the cranks turning. It is a different sensation from a hub-drive e-bike: assistance arrives in proportion to your own effort and tapers off when you ease up, which makes the D5 Pro feel like a very strong rider rather than a motorbike. A thumb throttle is fitted for starts and low-speed manoeuvring.

The chassis is the upgraded D5 platform. A 6061 aluminum frame carries a TRAMA FAT34-PLS fork with 100mm of travel, a 15 x 135mm thru-axle, lockout and adjustment, and Kenda 26 x 4.0 fat tires that keep the bike planted on snow, sand, gravel and broken pavement. A Shimano Altus M2000 9-speed drivetrain with an 11-36T cassette gives the gear range a mid-drive needs, and Tektro HD-E3520 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors handle a heavily loaded descent. Lighting includes a bright spotlight and an integrated brake light.

An integrated Samsung/LG 48V 20Ah battery - 960Wh - gives Himiway's quoted 60 to 80 mile range, recharged through the included 3.0A fast charger. The bike fits riders from 5'3" to 6'5", weighs 79 lb with the battery and takes 400 lb of rider and cargo, making it a credible option for hauling trailers, child seats or a loaded rack.

What is the advantage of a mid-drive over a hub motor?
A mid-drive sends power through the chain and gears, so shifting to a lower gear multiplies torque the same way it does for your legs. that makes steep, loaded climbs easier, and the centrally mounted weight improves balance on loose surfaces. a hub motor is simpler but cannot use the gears.
How far will it go on a charge?
Himiway rates the 960wh battery at 60 to 80 miles. mid-drives are generally efficient because the motor can stay in its best rpm range, but hills, rider weight and throttle use still shorten the figure.
Does it have a throttle, and what class is it?
Yes, a thumb throttle is fitted and it assists up to 20 mph, making it a class 2 pedal e-bike - street-legal in most u.s. jurisdictions. local rules on paths and trails vary, so check before riding.
What rider sizes does it fit?
Himiway lists 5'3" to 6'5". combined rider and cargo weight should stay at or under 400 lb.
Does a mid-drive need different maintenance?
Chain and cassette wear faster than on a hub-drive bike because the motor's torque passes through them. keep the chain clean and lubricated, ease off the pedals momentarily when shifting under power, and replace the chain before it stretches enough to damage the cassette.
How is the d5 pro different from the standard d5?
Same fat-tire platform and 960wh battery, different drive. the d5 uses a 750w rear hub motor with a 7-speed drivetrain; the d5 pro uses a 500w/130nm torque-sensing mid-drive with a 9-speed drivetrain, a thru-axle fork and upgraded lighting.
