Eunorau EKIDS16 1.0

The Eunorau EKIDS16 1.0 is an electric balance bike, and the most important thing to know up front is that it has no pedals. Eunorau lists it as having no pedals equipped; power comes entirely from a half-twist throttle, and footpegs for the child to rest their feet on arrive in the accessory box. That makes it a machine for a child still working on balance and steering rather than one ready to pedal, and it is the step before a pedal bike rather than a replacement for one. Eunorau gives an age guideline of 5 and above and a recommended rider height of 3'0" to 4'5", with saddle height adjustable from 18.5" to 22.8" off the ground so it has some room to grow. Total payload capacity is 120 lbs, and the bike weighs 28.6 lbs, light enough for most adults to pick up and carry to the car one-handed.

Speed is capped from the handlebar, and the cap is the main parental control. A selector gives three settings: 5, 7.5 and 12.5 mph, driven by a 24V 180W rear hub motor. Starting a new rider on 5 mph and moving up only as their steering and stopping get reliable is the sensible progression. The throttle also will not engage until the bike is already rolling at around 3 km/h, so a nervous grip on the twist grip at a standstill does not launch the bike forward. Power is a 24V 10Ah lithium-ion battery in a Eunorau-designed casing that the frame is shaped around, with a published range of 25 miles and a charge time of 4 to 5 hours on the included US-standard 2.0A smart charger. There is no display screen; a battery indicator shows what is left, and the bike powers up with a single button a child can press without help.

Braking deserves a close look, because there is only one brake. Eunorau fits a rear band-type brake on a hand lever, with nothing on the front wheel. A child used to a bicycle with two levers needs to be shown that this bike stops from the back wheel only, that the lever wants a smooth squeeze rather than a grab, and that stopping distances are longer than they expect. Keeping the speed selector low until braking has become automatic is worth doing for that reason alone. The rest of the bike is built to survive a learner: a 6061 aluminum frame, integrated die-cast aluminum alloy front forks with no welds to crack, 16" x 1.95" tires on integral front and rear wheels, a padded saddle and wheel reflectors.

The box contains the balance e-bike and an accessory box holding a tool kit, touch-up paint, the footpegs, a warranty card and the charger, so expect some light assembly and adjustment before the first ride. A helmet, adult supervision and somewhere well away from traffic are the three things to have sorted before handing it over. Driveways, quiet paths, parks and private ground are where a bike like this belongs while a child builds confidence.
