Eunorau EKIDS20 1.0

The Eunorau EKIDS20 1.0 is a pedal-equipped electric bike for children who have outgrown a balance bike and can handle a real drivetrain. Eunorau gives an age guideline of 8 and above and a recommended rider height of 3'5" to 5'0", with saddle height adjusting between 22.4" and 26.4" off the ground, which buys a season or two of growth. Total payload capacity is 200 lbs and the bike weighs 37.4 lbs, so an adult can lift it into a car but a child will struggle to pick it up unaided. It rolls on 20" x 1.95" integral front and rear wheels on a 6061 aluminum frame.

Speed is limited from the handlebar, with three settings on the selector: 7.5, 11 and 15.5 mph, driven by a 24V 250W rear motor. The low setting is where a new rider should start, with the next step up earned only once steering and braking are dependable. The throttle waits until the bike is already moving at roughly 3 km/h before it engages, which stops an accidental twist at a standstill from launching the bike. Pedaling works normally: a single-speed drivetrain with a 32T chainring on 140mm forged aluminum cranks and a 16T freewheel means there is no shifting to learn, and a cadence sensor adds motor help once the child is turning the pedals. A half-twist throttle is there for power without pedaling. A chain guard shields the chainring teeth from knocks and from small fingers and trouser legs.

Brakes are the part worth paying for on a child's bike, and this one has them on both wheels: disc brakes front and rear on 160mm rotors, with levers that include a motor cutoff switch so the motor stops pulling the moment a lever is squeezed. That last detail matters more than it sounds, because a young rider who panics often brakes and holds the throttle at the same time. Power is a 24V 10Ah lithium-ion battery in a Eunorau-designed casing, with a published range of 20 miles and a charge time of 4 to 5 hours on the included US-standard 2.0A smart charger. There is no display screen; a battery indicator shows remaining charge and the bike wakes with one button press, which a child can manage alone.

Where to ride it: the front fork is a rigid die-cast aluminum unit with no suspension listed, and the tires are narrow at 1.95", so paved paths, driveways, schoolyards and smooth hard-packed ground suit it far better than rough trail or rocky ground. The bike ships with an accessory box containing a tool kit, touch-up paint, the pedals, a warranty card and the charger, so set aside time for assembly and a proper check of brake and saddle adjustment before the first ride. Wheel reflectors are fitted, but a helmet, adult supervision and somewhere away from traffic are still what make it safe.
