This version of MotoTec's 1600 watt board splits its output between two motors, one driving each rear wheel at 800 watts. The arrangement keeps the board turning naturally while stopping the twist that a single-motor board develops under hard acceleration, and it puts power down through both rear tires instead of one, so traction on dirt improves and single-wheel spin largely disappears.

The board is built for surfaces a conventional skateboard cannot touch. Ten-inch air-filled 3.00-4 tires with a deep tread pattern give grip on trails, gravel and even sand, and the 12-ply maple deck rides on purpose-built trucks and spring bushings. A 36V 14AH pack drives the pair of motors to 18 to 22 mph, accelerates from 0 to 15 mph in 3.5 seconds and covers about 10 miles before needing a three to five hour charge.

Control comes from a wireless handheld remote with a variable throttle and forward, neutral and brake positions, so speed is metered rather than switched on and off. Two speed settings, slow and fast, let a new rider learn on reduced power. An onboard LED meter reports remaining battery, and automatic power shut-off protects the system when the board is left idle. MotoTec recommends riders aged 13 and up, to a maximum of 260 pounds.

Normal wear items such as tires, tubes, brake pads, chains and batteries are not covered, and neither is damage from racing, jumping, collisions, improper assembly, modification, or riding beyond the rated limits.

How fast does this electric skateboard go?
