The North Star fountain aerator in its medium residential sizing sits between the small backyard units and the commercial models, and it is intended for ponds that have grown past what a small aerator can keep up with. It serves residential, commercial and municipal water alike, producing a broad fountain display while shifting a serious volume of water underneath it.

Volume is what this unit is built around. The 1 hp motor moves 500 gallons per minute and the 1 1/2 hp motor moves 600 gallons per minute, drawing water up and spreading it across the surface instead of firing a thin jet skyward. That steady turnover pulls oxygen into the pond and works against the algae growth and surface debris that collect where water sits still. Spray measures about 8 feet high by 16 feet wide on the 1 hp motor and about 12 feet high by 18 feet wide on the 1 1/2 hp.

Both motors are oil-free stainless-steel submersible units rated for continuous operation, which removes oil changes, routine servicing and any need for a control box on the bank. The 1 hp motor can be had in 115 V or 230 V while the 1 1/2 hp is 230 V only, and 3-phase and 50 Hz builds are available in place of the standard single-phase 60 Hz configuration. Salt water as well as fresh water is approved. Light sets, either color-changing LED or Night Glo LED in two-light or four-light form, can be specified at purchase or retrofitted afterwards.

The aerator stays in the water year-round. Turn the power off when the season ends, leave the unit where it is, and energize it again in spring. Power has to run through a GFCI, and it should be switched off whenever swimmers are in the pond. A 115 V motor is only appropriate when the run from the main breaker is 100 feet or less; longer than that calls for 230 V. Units are manufactured in Holland, Michigan.
